The energy industry – including natural gas – is rightly perceived as having an impact on the environment. At Golar, we recognise the importance of energy supply and power generation in enabling communities to develop and prosper. We also recognise that we must balance this need with managing our own environmental footprint.

In addition to MARPOL – “marine pollution,” the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships – which is mandatory, we have ISO 14001 certification for environmental management.

Our vessels are built with relentless focus on fuel efficiency in mind – besides the very important environmental considerations this is in our own interest as well as in our customers’. It is also worth noting that our vessels run predominantly on recycled cargo boil-off (gas that would otherwise go to waste). Relative to petroleum and other liquids, the IGU (International Gas Union) states that use of LNG in transportation can reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by up to 20% whilst emissions of nitrogen oxide can be cut by up to 90% and particulate matter by up to 99%. Emissions of sulphur oxide can potentially be eliminated altogether.

Significantly, our business model involves repurposing vessels that might otherwise be scrapped: so far we have converted (or are in the process of converting) four LNG carriers into FSRUs and three into FLNGVs.

Environment policy

Our culture shall be recognised by a deeply held belief in the necessity of taking responsibility for the environment we operate in. We shall always comply with environmental regulations and have an active approach to find efficient solutions to further reduce our environmental footprint.
Our main environmental challenge is air emissions. To meet this challenge, we will focus our efforts on reducing our vessels’ fuel consumption.

We have an environmental programme that will be reviewed annually as part of the strategy and goal-setting process. The following guidelines will be applied in the review:

  • We will seek to take a long-term and sustainable approach when balancing priorities related to financial performance and environmental impacts.
  • We will take measures to bring forward and make use of available and proven technology in cooperation with our customers to reduce our environmental impact and ensure an energy-efficient operation.

We will promote a proactive approach towards our customers related to environmental matters and work together with them to explore and develop technological / operational solutions contributing to minimising the environmental footprint of our activities.

Related to all aspects of our environmental challenges, we will be open and explicit on the communication of our intentions, actions and results.

Case study: Trim optimisation

As part of our drive to reduce atmospheric emissions we commissioned Det Norske Veritas (DNV) to carry out a detailed study into the trim of one of our vessels, the Golar Maria, with a view to finding improvements in fuel efficiency. DNV is an autonomous and independent foundation whose purpose is to safeguard life, property and the environment.

The DNV study used a simulator to test and investigate draft-speed-trim combinations, using historical voyage data. The study found that there were potential savings. For example it was shown that for the full load condition, at lower speeds (≤17 knots), bow down is the optimum trim, but at high speed of 19.5 knots, bow up is the optimum trim. These results help the captain to make an informed decision on how best to trim the vessel for optimum fuel efficiency.
